PROJECT OVERVIEW
Receiptor is an expense tracking app designed to simplify how small businesses manage receipts. It was built to address common frustrations like manual entry, cluttered spreadsheets, and lack of team visibility. The platform includes AI-powered scanning, team workspaces, and intelligent reports—all designed through user research, wireframing, and prototyping in Figma and Uizard. This example follows the web-application redesign. Through testing we found this redesign boosted user efficiency by 63%.
IDEATE
Product Vision, Solutions and MVP
Description
Through research and competitor analysis, one issue became clear: existing expense tools were not designed for everyday users, they were built for accountants, not real people juggling receipts on the go.
Users didn't want another confusing over complicated tool; they wanted a fast, simple way to scan receipts, track spending, and stay organized, whether they were working solo or across a team. What they needed was clarity, automation, and control.
Receiptor was built to simplify expense tracking for small teams and freelancers by replacing messy, manual processes with automation and clarity. The app uses AI to scan receipts, organize expenses, and generate reports; making financial management fast, accessible, and stress-free.
The Challenge
Key Features
Manual Data Entry is Time-Consuming
Existing Tools are too Complex for Small Teams
Poor Visibility Across Team Expenses
Step-by-step onboarding tutorial for players that indicate they are beginners, and a resources page with updated Rotowire articles to inform users on NHL player news
The interface was designed to be clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate—no accounting degree required.
With team roles and workspaces, Receiptor allows businesses to track, organize, and manage expenses across users in real-time.
Key Takeaways
Description
Over the course of this project, I learned the importance of working in a team setting and the advantage of using A.I. in design. Leveraging A.I. as a designer allows strong designers to produce higher quality work and be more efficient; giving designers a head start to any project.
Some key takeaways were:
Collaboration strengthens outcomes
Working in a team setting taught me how to share ownership, communicate effectively, and build on others' ideas to improve the final product.
AI accelerated my creative process by helping me generate wireframes, content, and design variations quickly. It gave me more time to focus on user experience and strategy, turning early ideas into stronger, more refined solutions.
AI can accelerate creativity
Leveraging AI didn’t just speed things up—it enhanced the quality of the work by giving me a solid starting point and reducing repetitive tasks.
Efficiency doesn't mean compromise

Expense Page
Description
I wanted the design to feel clear, intuitive, and rooted in simplicity—reflecting Receiptor’s goal of making expense tracking effortless. It needed to be a space where anyone, no matter their technical skill or financial background, could confidently scan a receipt, view their spending, and navigate the app without hesitation.
These designs were created through a three step process: crazy 8's, 3 hand-drawn wireframes, then create one digital wireframe used to create this prototype.
A simple, welcoming and engaging screen that represents the simplicity Receiptor is looking to depict.
This was designed to fit the industry standard page. This philosophy is based on "if it works, why change it?" This focus was to attract

The team member profile page allows users to view individual roles, track submitted expenses, and manage permissions within their workspace.

DEFINE
Lack of Team Visibility
Teams often struggle to track who submitted what, when, and for which project—leading to confusion and poor financial oversight.
Tools like QuickBooks and Expensify offer powerful features, but their complexity creates a steep learning curve for non-accountants or first-time users.
Declutter Interfaces
Lack of Automation
Manual Expense Tracking is Time-Consuming
Users waste time categorizing expenses, naming files, and filling out reports manually—tasks that could be easily streamlined through AI.
Many users still rely on spreadsheets or paper receipts, which require constant manual input and lead to lost time and frequent errors.
RESEARCH
Competitor Analysis
Description
I conducted a competitor audit of leading expense tracking tools to identify usability gaps, feature limitations, and opportunities to better serve small businesses and freelancers.
As this business is still operating, out of respect, I am choosing to refrain from sharing information that may harm or impact business processes.
To ensure Receiptor addressed real user pain points and stood out in the expense management space, I conducted both secondary research and worked closely with existing primary research gathered by other team members. I performed a detailed competitor audit to identify gaps in the current market, focusing on user experience, pricing models, and tools within applications like Expensify, QuickBooks, and Zoho Expense.
This collaborative and layered research approach helped validate our the missing piece within the space and guided the development of user flows, key features, and interface decisions that ensured Receiptor was not just functional, but truly user-centered.
Based on insights from user interviews and market data, I developed personas to guide the design process by highlighting user goals (such as saving time and staying organized), pain points (like dealing with paper receipts and manual entry), and context (including freelancers, small business owners, and office managers).
